Google Founders to Sell 10 Million of Their Google Shares

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the two billionaire co-founders of Google, will each sell 5 million of their Google shares over the next five years, according to an SEC filing.

Since Page and Brin are significant shareholders and executives for the technology giant, they are required to report their transaction plans for their piece of the company they founded over a decade ago.

Currently the two men own approximately 57.7 million shares of Google () about 18% of Googles market value and 59% of the voting power. After the five year plan is complete, they will own around 47.7 million shares, dropping their interest in Google to around 15% of its capital stock and 48% of its voting power. This equates to a transaction of $2.25 billion, based on the current value of a share of Google, $550.01.

Yes, this technically means that the two co-founders are surrendering their absolute voting control of the company, but its incredibly hard to see a situation where every other investor and shareholder in the company would vote against their wishes. In other words, the drop in their voting power is not a big deal.

Why would the founders sell their shares of Google, especially as the stock has risen dramatically in recent years? The answer is diversification, one of the most prudent and practical moves in investing. Its the same thing that Bill Gates has done for years in order to diversify his profile and give him the flexibility to invest in other endeavors, such as his foundation. In fact, the founders have done something similar before, back in 2004.

* What are your thoughts on salary vs job satisfaction?

* Understanding what the main Information technology areas and markets are – and what makes them different.

* You’ll also need to think hard about the amount of time and effort you’ll put into your education.

The best way to avoid all the jargon and confusion, and reveal the best route for you, have a good talk with an industry expert and advisor; a person who understands the commercial reality as well as each certification.

Don’t get hung-up, like so many people do, on the certification itself. Training is not an end in itself; this is about employment. Stay focused on what it is you want to achieve.

Students often train for a single year but end up doing a job for a lifetime. Avoid the mistake of opting for what may seem to be a program of interest to you only to spend 20 years doing a job you don’t like!

You must also consider how you feel about career progression and earning potential, plus your level of ambition. It makes sense to understand what the role will demand of you, what exams will be required and how to develop your experience.

Always seek guidance and advice from a professional advisor, irrespective of whether you have to pay – as it’s a lot cheaper and safer to discover early on if a chosen track will suit, rather than realise following two years of study that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and have to start from the beginning again.

Validated exam preparation and simulation materials are essential – and really must be sought from your training provider.

Google, the internet search giant, has been found guilty of infringing French copyright law by a court in Paris. French publishing house, La Martiniere, was awarded the sum of 300,000 Euros (equivalent to $ 430,000). Google must also pay an additional 10,000 Euros ($ 14,000) each day until the book extracts are withdrawn from Google’s database. The action was initiated by the French Publisher’s Association, as author’s group and La Martiniere.

The size of the final settlement is trivial for Google – but there may yet be implications for Google’s plans to scan and make available online as many of the world’s books as possible. Google is currently in the process of scanning and digitising pretty much any book it can get its hands on. Out of copyright books are made available in their entirety. Books which remain in copyright either have snippets of them made available online or have the whole book made available under a licensing scheme.

It’s hardly the first time Google has found itself in hot water regarding their ambitious plan to become the world’s digital librarian. A class action was filed against Google Books by the Authors Guild, the Association of American Publishers and a number of individual authors and publishers in 2001. Google had, they alleged, breached copyright laws by scanning books from university libraries without getting permission from the copyright owners in some cases.

At the time, Google claimed that it was operating under the “fair use” principle as only short snippets of books scanned without the permission of copyright holders were made available.

In October of 2008 a deal was struck with Google establishing a $ 125 million fund to compensate authors whose works were made available online. However, the deal was applicable in North America only and raised problems with books which, whilst perhaps out of copyright in the USA, were still under copyright law in other parts of the world.

As well as opposition from Europe, including both the German and French governments, Google faces competition from Yahoo, Microsoft and Amazon – who all support the “Open Book Alliance” run by the Internet Archive. The Internet Archive is a non-profit organisation which is also in the business of scanning and digitising books. Over half a million books have been scanned and stored by the Internet Archive to date, all of which are available free online. The founder of the Internet Archive, Brewster Kahle, is concerned that Google is attempting to monopolise the library system.

Google points out that their project will make millions of currently out of print books, which otherwise be inaccessible to readers, available. It’s probably also worth noting that Amazon Kindle users can also download out of copyright ebooks for the Kindle direct from Amazon’s website. There are a number of other projects which make out of copyright books available online free. It seems probable that our reading habits are about to undergo a major change. The current methods of book storage and delivery will be brought up to date using the internet. However, in order for this to succeed, it will first be necessary to put a legal framework in place which protects the interests of authors and copyright holders.

In actuality, security now only emerges in a rapidly growing marketplace, driven by work-skills shortages. It’s this alone that creates the appropriate setting for a secure marketplace – a far better situation.

The Information Technology (IT) skills shortfall in the country falls in at over 26 percent, as shown by the latest e-Skills investigation. Meaning that for each four job positions in existence throughout the computer industry, there are barely three qualified workers to do them.
