WordPress Tips and Tricks: Embed Audio and Video in a Blog Post

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

Blogging has come a long way. Originally, it was just text and links. Now you can add images, audio and video to your thoughts.

There’s more than one way to accomplish your goal. The simplest is to embed the media files in your blog. To do that, you would upload your video and audio files to a media Web site.

These sites generate code for each file. The code is copied and pasted into the blog. That makes it appear the video or audio is on your site. Readers would click to play it.

YouTube is the most popular site for posting video. To use it, create an account. Follow the steps to upload and view your videos.

To the right of your video will be an area labeled Embed. Copy the code in that area. Paste the code into your blog. The video will appear at that point.

When you publish the post, the YouTube player will appear. Readers can watch the video without leaving your site.

You can set video privacy options from your YouTube account settings. Set privacy to Public and reach millions of viewers. To control who sees the videos, set them to Private.

YouTube limits video lengths to 10 minutes. That’s typical of Internet media sites.

You may find all this confusing. I have a tip on my site that will help clarify it.

Free audio hosting is more difficult to find. However, you’ll find it at Chirbit. It accepts MP3, M4A and WAV formats. The size limit is 120MB per file.

This allows two hours of MP3 and M4A audio per file. WAV will only get ten minutes. You can always convert WAV files to MP3 or M4A. Zamzar is a good place to start.

To use Chirbit, create an account. Then, upload your audio files. You’ll see them on Chirbit’s server. A link will appear below each file. Click the link and select a blogging program. This will be whatever you’re using. Most blogging programs are included.

Enter your blog address, along with your user name and password. Write your blog post in the Chirbit interface. The post and audio player are published to your blog.

Of course, you have to first record the audio. Audacity is an excellent program for that.

Finally, you could try Zoopy. It hosts both video and audio. Files are limited to 200 megabytes. Zoopy is free.

First, create an account. Then upload your files. Zoopy includes an embed link on every piece of media. Click the link and the site generates Web code.

Copy and paste the code into your blog post. Publish the post. The appropriate media player is automatically created at that spot.

All the previous sites limit the length of videos. If you can do your thing in 10 minutes or so, you’re set. If longer videos are necessary, you could carve them into 10-minute segments. Or, you could turn to WordPress.

This is a large, free blog site, similar to Blogger and LiveJournal. But only WordPress offers virtually unlimited storage space. All you need is a little money.

WordPress gives everyone 3 gigabytes of space. However, that is for static images. For video, you must buy Videopress, a program that plugs into WordPress. That runs $5 a month, and comes with 2GB of video space.

You can then upload videos to WordPress. They are automatically converted into the best format. The Videopress player supports high-definition.

Additional space can be purchased in increments for videos. Those purchases also allow you to include audio files.

Audio is managed using WordPress controls. Inserting audio into your post creates an audio player. Common audio formats are supported.
